COVID-19 Update

Impact on students and teaching for 2020/21

We want to make sure that you have a great learning experience at our Higher Education Centre whilst keeping you safe and following government advice. We have been doing everything we can to limit the impact the COVID-19 outbreak will have on your plans to study with us in September and the information below outlines our plans for 2020/21.

We will updated this page regularly and get in touch directly with those students who have already applied and/or accepted an offer with us. This will include any changes specific to your course.

How will you be taught?

From September 2020 it is likely that teaching will take a blended approach. This means that face-to-face teaching will be delivered following guidelines on social distancing alongside online/virtual learning. This may also mean smaller class sizes and changes to the times/days you will be asked to attend College.

In the instance of any changes to government restrictions on social distancing or a re-introduction of lockdown measures, the ratio of face-to-face and online learning may vary, with the possibility of full online learning during a term.

We are confident that we are well-prepared and able to maintain a high quality of teaching through online learning as we have already demonstrated a successful shift of our teaching to a range of digital formats since lockdown began in March.

Course that require practical assessment, observation or work placement

A number of our courses have a strong practical/work-based element to them and we are keen to retain this in order to provide you with a worthwhile and quality learning experience. Current guidelines on social distancing may mean that practical assessments, observations or work placements are moved to later in the course once social distancing restrictions are eased. In this instance, we will contact students on the specific courses affected.

Access to resources - FREE laptop for all higher education students

Each student who enrols on an HNC/HND or foundation degree at New College will receive a FREE HP Notebook* to help with your studies, and is yours to keep at the end of the course. This initiative supports a flexible/ blended learning approach and ensures equal opportunity to the same learning resources and software, no matter your circumstances or place of study.

Review of the situation

We fully appreciate that students and staff want clarity going forward, but we also know that the situation is likely to change quickly. We are putting plans in place to make sure that we can adapt quickly and flexibly to these changes.

We will continue to review our plans during the summer and subsequent autumn term as we get more information from the government and keep you updated.
