The Extended Diploma is a two-year, part-time course that meets entry requirements in its own right if you want to progress to higher education courses in construction areas before entering employment. It can also support you if you want to progress directly to employment in job roles in construction or a professional construction role and Higher Apprenticeships in the construction sector.
It allows you to develop a substantial core of knowledge, to study in depth a full range of optional units, and to develop the broader skills highly valued by higher education institutions, such as critical thinking, and the range of written and verbal communications required in the construction sector.
Examples of units studied are construction principles, construction design, surveying in construction, graphical design, building regulations, health and safety and management of a construction project.
The three main forms of assessment for this qualification are externally assessed units, end assessments which measure your learning across a range of content and internally assessed units.
During your course of study, you will be involved in demonstrations, practical work, theory lessons, computer sessions, tutorials, and project work. You will also have timetabled sessions in English and Maths if required, work experience and enrichment as part of your Study Programme.
Typically, applicants will have one of the following;
Along with, 3 GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A-C), including English Language and maths or equivalent. You may also be required to attend an interview with the Course Leader
Mature applicants without formal qualifications, but with evidence of sufficient, relevant industrial experience will be considered. You will also be required to attend an interview with the Course Leader.
On successfully passing the course you can progress to a range of Higher Education courses or progress directly to employment in job roles in construction or a professional construction role and Higher Apprenticeships in the construction sector.
There are many roles in the Construction sector where recruitment is at graduate level. This qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses, for example: BSc (Hons) in Construction Management, BSc (Hons) in Property Management (Building Surveying), BSc (Hons) in Architecture, BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering, HNC/D or Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering, HNC/D or Foundation Degree in Building Services Engineering, HNC/D or Foundation Degree in Construction and the Built Environment.
As part of the overall Study Programme you will complete 30 hours of work experience.
All Personal protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided including safety boots, overalls, polo shirt and safety glasses. You would be expected to equip yourself with a range of stationery but we will provide a scientific calculator.
Tuition fees for 2022 entry: £3,500 per annum.
