The Foundation Degree programme offered in the Engineering Professional Department is aimed at consolidating and extending the skills and knowledge of those working in the engineering sectors. Essential subject knowledge content has been designed in collaboration with employers, professional sector bodies and accreditation from Oxford Brookes University. Progression opportunities from the FdEng is through a 1 year, day release, Top-Up BEng (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering also, to be, accredited by Oxford Brookes University.
Topics in year one include: Electrical & Electronic Science; Engineering Management; Mathematics 1; Mechanical Principles; Engineering Science; Work based module.
Topics in year two include: Stress Analysis and Materials; Manufacturing 1 and 2; Programmable Logic Controllers; Work based project; Computer Aided Engineering.
Students will have access to our industry-standard workshop facilities.
This course is studied full-time over 2 years (24 months).
You will be provided with details of the assignment requirements for each Unit. Students will be encouraged to engage with personal and professional development, gaining formative feedback on progress towards Unit outcomes, and developing knowledge and competence in the discipline.
Summative assessment is mainly through coursework. Students will evidence their progress through written academic essays and reports, or practical activities, which will vary according to each individual Unit assessment requirements. Each Unit will carry more than one assessment task in order to meet the learning outcomes and criteria for the Unit as a whole. There are no summative written exams for this course, however in some Units, your knowledge may be formatively assessed through in class tests.
3 GCSEs, incl. either Maths or Science, at grade 9-4 (A*-C). Alternative equivalency testing may be undertaken plus 2 A Levels at grades A-D (one of which should be subject related) and Vocational Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in a related subject or Level 3 Apprenticeship.
Mature applicants without formal qualifications, but with evidence of sufficient, relevant industrial experience will be considered.
The region is currently experiencing a period of rejuvenation and growth in the engineering sector and there is an increasing demand for a well-qualified and highly skilled engineering workforce. The majority of students graduating from the FdEng will be employed and take their qualifications and experience back to their employer to be part of the increasingly technical and highly qualified workforce. An alternative destination for FdEng in Manufacturing Engineering students would be to carry on with their studies to complete a Top Up Year and gain a BEng honours in Manufacturing Engineering (to be validated 2021). Students following this option will be in a position to follow a career as Incorporated Engineers and have the necessary education to gain that professional recognition.
