This course prepares students for a career in graphic design. The first year explores the fundamentals of graphic design by delving into the topics such as creative typography, visual communication and how graphic design has developed over the years.
The second year builds on students' knowledge and skills exploring not only static design aspects in greater depth but adding motion graphics and kinetic typography whilst also developing the students' own professional practice and research skills.
The final year focuses on a dissertation, major project and professional practice to ensure that students have a well-developed portfolio of work that they can use to support that search that search for their ideal job.
Topics in year one include: Introduction to creative Typography; Graphic Design, Process and Print; Introduction to Visual Communication; Web Design; Graphic Design, Culture and Change.
Topics in year two include: Creative Industry Professional Practice*; Graphic Design in Practice; Visual Communication in Context; Motion Graphics and Kinetic Typography; Research and Analysis Methods.
Topics in year three include: Self-initiated Major Project; Extended Research Project/Dissertation; Creative Industry Entrepreneurialism*

The majority of teaching will take place through interactive workshops. Skills, techniques and ideas are explored as a group and individually. There will be technician support for consolidation and to facilitate more individualised work. Students are encouraged to participate in active dialogue throughout the teaching and assessment process, where formative feedback, both verbal and written plays a large part in the development of individuals work and professionalism. . There are no formal written examinations within the programme. Students will be assessed mainly though coursework, involving projects which are informed by professional practice and/or industry led.
Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in an art related subject, including 2 A Levels at grade A-D (one of which should be art related) and a Level 3 Diploma in Foundation Studies Art and Design.
For mature students over 18, suitable work experience may be taken into consideration instead of formal academic studies. Applicants will be required to attend an interview and provide portfolio evidence of their skills and knowledge. Applicants should have at least two years’ experience of working or volunteering in an educational setting prior to commencing the course.
Students can progress into careers and various roles allied to the creative industries and image creation which could include advertising, marketing and journalism. Students may also take on free-lance work, and set up their own design business as a creative entrepreneur.
