About the course

The HNC courses offered in the Construction Professional Department are designed to consolidate and extend the skills and knowledge of those working in the building and civil engineering sectors, with essential subject knowledge content designed by employers and professional sector bodies. Students will have access to our industry-standard workshop facilities.

In the first year, students will study four core units: Construction Technology, Science and Materials, Construction Practice and Management, and Individual Project Management.

In the second year, students study units to focus on their chosen subject pathway.

Course content includes: Individual Project; Construction Technology; Science & Materials; Construction Practice & Management; Legal & Statutory Responsibility in Construction; Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification); Surveying, Measuring & Setting out; Civil Engineering technology.

This course is studied part-time over 24 months.

You will be provided with details of the assignment requirements for each Unit. Students will be encouraged to engage with personal and professional development, gaining formative feedback on progress towards Unit outcomes, and developing knowledge and competence in the discipline.

Summative assessment is mainly through coursework. Students will evidence their progress through written academic essays and reports, or practical activities, which will vary according to each individual Unit assessment requirements. Each Unit will carry more than one assessment task in order to meet the learning outcomes and criteria for the Unit as a whole. There are no summative written exams for this course, however in some Units, your knowledge may be formatively assessed through in class tests.

Entry requirements

Typically, applicants will have one of the following;

  • Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in a related subject
  • 2 A Level’s at grade A to D (one of which should be subject related)

Along with, 3 GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A-C), including English Language and maths or equivalent. You may also be required to attend an interview with the Course Leader

Mature applicants without formal qualifications, but with evidence of sufficient, relevant industrial experience will be considered. You will also be required to attend an interview with the Course Leader.

Where next?

On successful completion of this course, students may progress onto studies at Level 5 or above including HND or BSc/BEng. Progression onto other courses will be subject to meeting the entry criteria of the institution. Students may also move into higher roles or positions within their organisation, or wish to develop their career further by moving into other employment.
