Higher Apprenticeship Learning and Skills Teacher
About the course
LST is for individuals interested in training to be a teacher within a post-compulsory education environment, for example Further Education, Work Based Learning or Higher Education. As part of the apprenticeship, apprentices will achieve a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.
Candidates must be responsible for delivery, planning and assessment of learning of groups.
Over the duration of 24 months you will study the following:
The standard: The Learning and Skills Teacher (LST) is a ‘dual-professional’ role. Before being trained as a LST, apprentices will have first achieved competence in their vocational or subject specialism.
On Programme assessment: Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or equivalent; Level 2 Safeguarding; Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment (EPA).
All the above outcomes must be achieved before the end-point assessment.
Functional Skills: Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment (EPA).
End Point assessment: Professional Discussion informed by
1a. Thematic Case-Study (TCS)
1b. Online Presentation (OP)
1a: The apprentice will create and submit a TCS mapped to the relevant KSBs across the assessment Themes. The IA will evaluate the TCS, and prepare questions for the subsequent professional discussion.
1b: The apprentice will prepare and submit an OP demonstrating their journey towards their mastery of current technologies. The IA will evaluate the OP and prepare questions for the subsequent professional discussion.
The Professional Discussion will be graded: Fail or Pass.
2. Two Teaching Observations (TO) mapped to the skills and behaviours across the assessment themes observed (face-to-face) and followed by questions and answers.
The TO will be graded Fail, Pass or Distinction.
Entry requirements
Apprentices must be employed within a relevant teaching/training job role to undertake the programme. If you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths, or equivalent, you will be required to achieve this by the end of the programme.
Where next?
Upon completion of the LST apprenticeship, with the transferable skills gained the apprentice can progress further to achieve Qualified Teacher and Skills status with the Education and Training Foundation.
With the employer’s approval, the LST could progress onto curriculum/training leadership roles following an adequate period of experience teaching at this level, within the sector.
This nationally recognised programme is for those new to teaching or those wishing to upskill into a full teaching position.
