HND in Art and Design (Graphic Design)

About the course

Higher Nationals are level 4 and 5 qualifications – equivalent to a foundation degree or the first two years of a full degree. They are vocational courses with an emphasis on ‘learning by doing’; focusing on the skills and knowledge needed for a particular industry.

This diploma course prepares students for a career in the Graphic Design industry in areas such as Commercial Design, Graphic Design for Film and TV and Web and Advertising.

The course includes modules studying Professional Practice, Techniques and Processes, Typography and Graphic Design Practices.

The programme is supported by lecturers who are practitioners within the industry. Students can access our professional standard facilities including a Mac Suite, traditional print room, professional photographic studio.

This course can be studied full-time or part-time over 24 months.

Entry requirements

GCSE English and Maths, 9-4 (A*-C). Alternative equivalency testing may be undertaken plus 80 UCAS points from at least one of the following:

  • 2 A Levels at grade A-D (one of which should be art related)
  • Vocational - Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in an art related subject
  • Access Diploma - Level 3 in Foundation Studies Art & Design

For mature students over 18, suitable work experience may be taken into consideration instead of formal academic studies.

Where next?

On completion, you may have the option to further your studies with a top-up year of a full honours degree at university. This can be dependent on a particular level 6 running and subject to an interview and terms and conditions.

Alternatively, you will be well placed to pursue a career within the advertising and design industry.
