BTEC HND in Art and Design - Art Practice

About the course

Higher Nationals are level 4 and 5 qualifications – equivalent to a foundation degree or the first two years of a full degree. They are vocational courses with an emphasis on ‘learning by doing’; focusing on the skills and knowledge needed for a particular industry.

This in-depth diploma course allows you to enhance your existing knowledge and understanding of fine art disciplines. To complement your studies in historical and contextual studies you will gain the opportunity to refine your practical skills in 2D and 3D work, whilst enhancing your knowledge of interdisciplinary Art Practices.

The programme is supported by lecturers who are practitioners within the creative industry. Students will have access to professional standard facilities including a Print and Ceramics studio, Mac Suite, Professional Photographic Studio and Darkroom.

This course is to be studied over 24 months.

Entry requirements

GCSE English and Maths, 9-4 (A*-C). Alternative equivalency testing may be undertaken plus 80 UCAS points from at least one of the following: 2 A Levels at grade A-D (one of which should be Art related), Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in an Art related subject and Access diploma Level 3 Foundation Studies in Art & Design.

For mature students over 18, suitable work experience may be taken into consideration instead of formal academic studies. Applicants will be required to attend an interview and provide portfolio evidence of their skills and knowledge.

Where next?

On completion, you may have the option to further your studies with a top-up year of a full honours degree at university. This can be dependent on a particular level 6 running and subject to an interview and terms and conditions. Alternatively, you will be well placed to pursue a career within the creative arts industry.

Example job roles:

  • Art Practitioner
  • Illustrator
