Psychology A Level

This A Level is included within the following A Level pathways as a Recommended Core subject: Business and Entrepreneurship; Social Sciences; STEM and Healthcare. It is included in the following pathways as a Recommended Additional Subject: Creative Studies; English and Communications; Law and Legal; Medical Health. However, you can take Psychology with any A Level/equivalent combination, there is plenty of choice and flexibility.

Psychology is the study of human behaviour. During this exciting course, we will consider how we become the people we are and how we are influenced by our experiences. You will also study the process of development and memory, how the brain functions and controls our behaviour, and why people become criminals.

You will design experiments, conduct research, analyse results and draw conclusions – all essential skills to support you with your career journey ahead.

You will study the course for 4.5 hours a week in the first year and 5 hours a week in the second year. You should expect to spend an additional 4.5 hours per week on homework and private study. Mock exams are held during the first year (in February/March), but do not count towards the final A Level. Exams for the whole A level are held in May or June of the second year.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including:

Combined Science or two separate Sciences

English and Maths at grade 5 or above

No previous knowledge is required, but you should have a keen interest in understanding and examining human behaviour from a scientific standpoint.

Future career and study opportunities

Psychology is a versatile A Level and will enable you to access a wide range of degree courses at university. This subject is particularly valued in all the caring professions, as well as being useful for careers in human resources, media, marketing, teaching and the emergency services.

If you choose to continue your psychology studies at university, opportunities include clinical, educational, occupational and forensic psychology.

Work experience/Careers Extra

This course does not contain a specific work experience component but many of the skills you will learn are essential to employability. If needed, our Employability Team can help you find local work placements that will support the course.

Additional resources/costs

We offer online textbooks and will encourage you to print off study notes that your teacher provides. You will have access to the internet at college and to our Virtual Learning Environment, which will enhance your learning.
